840MW more power likely to be imported from India
Bangladesh is likely to import another 840 MW of electricity -- 340 MW from Triupura and 500 MW from West Bengal.
Bangladesh's interest to import the new bulk of electricity in addition to the existing import of 660 MW was positively discussed in the Bangladesh-India joint steering committee (JSC) meeting in the capital yesterday.
According to Power Division statement on the meeting outcome, both sides discussed the vast areas of cooperation in the power sector and expressed satisfaction over the progress of the 1,320 MW Rampal coal-fired power plant project's implementation.
The meeting discussed solar power project in Rampal, capacity building of Bheramara inter-connection substation, Bangladesh's initiative to import power from Nepal, joint investment of Bangladesh, Bhutan and India in Bhutan's 1,125 MW Kuri-2 hydropower project, Indian corporate sector's investment in Bangladesh, and Bangladesh's participation in Indian power sector.
Bangladesh power secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus and Indian power secretary Ajoy Kumar Bhalla led their respective sides at the 13th meeting of the joint steering committee.
The last joint steering committee meeting was held in New Delhi.
