Gayle Anderson observed Earth Day 2024 in Playa del Rey by taking a closer look at the Ballona Creek Trash Interceptor 007. It’s a completely automated solar-powered trash collection device designed to capture floating plastic and trash before it can reach the ocean. This pilot program is in its second year and produced by The Ocean Cleanup, a nonprofit environmental engineering organization based in the Netherlands, that develops technology to extract plastic pollution from the oceans. The organization started with the Pacific Ocean and its plastic garbage. The organization has extended its program to rivers in countries including Indonesia, Guatemala, and the United States.

In addition, Los Angeles County is working to protect the planet from plastics with its Clean LA program, which features several components:
• Protect local communities and the environment by preventing and reporting illegal dumping.
• Educate the public and reinforce positive behaviors using the 4Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rethink.
