COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley announced that Agot Makeer (pronounced uh-GOT muh-KEER) will join the Gamecocks with four years of eligibility beginning with the 2025-26 academic year. The 6-foot-1 wing grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, and played her final season of high school basketball at Montverde Academy in Florida.
“We’re excited to bring Agot into our Gamecock family,” Staley said. “She brings size, speed and versatility to our guard unit with her ability to play multiple positions. Her ball handling and passing skills enhance her ability to score and spread the defense. Agot is super competitive, talented and has an unlimited ceiling.”
The No. 6 recruit in the Class of 2025, according to ESPN, Makeer has also made her mark on the international scene, helping Canada to a silver medal at the FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup last summer. Her 17.7 points per game at the event led her team and ranked fourth in the tournament. Her scoring came on 48.3 percent shooting and was paired with 7.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and a tournament-best 4.0 steals per game. The complete seven-game effort in addition to double-doubles in the semifinals and championship games earned her a spot on the tournament’s All-Star Five.
Makeer completed her high school career at Montverde Academy last season, earning a spot in the McDonald’s All-American Game and was a Nasmith All-America honorable mention. Her 10.0 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game helped Montverde to 25-1 regular-season record, a runner-up finish in the Sunshine Independent Athletic Association (SIAA) state tournament and a runner-up finish at the Chipotle High School National Championships in Fishers, Ind. Makeer poured in 20 points in the title game at nationals after leading the team with seven rebounds in the semifinals.
Makeer made the move to Montverde after a junior season at Crestwood Prep that saw her average 19.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists. Crestwood went undefeated in 2023-24 and claimed the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association (OSBA) championship for the fifth-straight season. Makeer was named MVP of the tournament after pouring in 29 points in the title game, including nine three-pointers.
Makeer joins Ayla McDowell (Cypress, TX / Cypress Springs) in the Gamecocks’ 2025 Signing Class. Staley has also added transfers Ta’Niya Latson (Miami, FL / Florida State) and Madina Okot (Mumias, Kenya / Mississippi State) to the Gamecocks’ 2025-26 roster.
