A call has been issued by the Energy Ministry for industrial firms interested in investing in large-scale solar farms with a minimum output power of 1Megawatt peak power.

Addressing a news conference at the Water Services Corporation offices in Luqa, Energy Minister Joe Mizzi said that by the end of last year, alternative energy generation in Malta accounted to about six per cent of the total. The new scheme is aimed to reach the 2020 target of 10 per cent.

Through this call government aims to increase the solar energy output by 35 MW.

This is the second called following that of 15MW issued last year.

Submissions will be received until October 26 with the ministry aiming to adjudicate the contracts by the end of this year.

While in domestic schemes there is a fixed feed-in tariff, in this call it is up to the bidders to compete between themselves and the government will choose the most advantageous offer.

The farms should be up and running in two years’ time, in time for the 2020 deadline. The bids have to be in line with the solar farm policy guidelines which had been issued by the planning authority last year.
